Many locations have adequate depth of water, but access is blocked by a shallow patch that may not be easily removed. At high tide they are accessible because of the increased depth over the shallow bar or equivalent. That is one example of a useful aspect of the tide.
The tides are broadly classified into two types: Spring Tides and Neap Tides.
• During the full moon and new moon days, the sun, the moon and the earth are in the same line and the tides are highest. These tides are called spring tides. It is high tide when water covers much of the shore by rising to its highest level.
• But when the moon is in its first and last quarter, the ocean waters get drawn in diagonally opposite directions by the gravitational pull of sun and earth resulting in low tides. These tides are called neap tides. It is low tide when water falls to its lowest level and recedes from the shore.
Tides help us in the following ways:
• High tides help in navigation. This helps the ships to arrive at the harbour more easily.
• The high tides also help in fishing.
• Tides are also helpful in generating electricity.
A tide table becomes a major point of reference when a vessel tries to enter an inlet or a bay or an estuary for the purpose of docking. In water-parts like these, the presence of a low tide will moor the vessel even before it can dock at the dockyard and a high tide will disallow a vessel to dock at the required area. Since a tide table helps to predict the height of the tide, a captain will find it easier to manoeuvre the vessel accordingly and cruise smoothly into the intended destination.
Very strong tidal streams are experienced in the Gulf of Kutch,Gulf of Kambhat(Formerly Cambay)and Hooghly river estuary. The channels are continuously changing ,in spite of the very strong tidal streams. A small ship sunk near a navigation channel can create very strong eddies and shift the channel itself to a new location.
So it can be safely said tidal currents do not prevent siltation, infact promote siltation if they are meddled with.
